Name: Hayley Lynn Forrester
Age: 17
Gender: female
Location: Marquette
Supernatural Affinity
Type:
~Cursed Werewolf~
Powers:
uncontrolled change into a werewolf at the full moon, when she's taken too much damage or is in an uncontrolled fury
Appearance:
Generally speaking, people note that Hayley has a babyface. She just looks young, often enough, and people clock her for being younger than she is, something that occasionally bothers her because she is not fourteen. But still, she hopes eventually she grows out of it. She's a bit frail looking at times, a thin girl to begin with and because she keeps up with dancing, she maintains that physique. She's stronger than she looks, but not overly muscled, mostly it's just tone.
Her hair is long and generally frizzier than she'd like, but she isn't a girl who's ever been big into fashion, makeup or putting a whole lot of energy into things of that nature, so she's often at a loss as to how to tame it. It's color is somewhere between blonde and brown, an inbetween shade that doesn't seem to be either a lot of the times, though in the summer it bleaches out more and in the winter it tends to get darker again. Her eyes are a dark shade of blue.
Style wise she has a lot of hand me downs, and tries to make due with clothes that were given to her, or she got fairly cheaply. Her family's never been all that rich, and so designer outfits she just doesn't have. But then again her priorities are much different than that, so she doesn't seem to mind. She goes for natural, comfortable sorts of clothes, often chosen more for their durability or how well she can move in them than how they look.
Personality:
Hayley is generally known for being quiet. She was never one of the popular kids in school, and while she wasn't friendless, she could be considered a sort of geeky type of girl. She's very sweet, with a temperment that's patient and understanding. It doesn't mean that she's a girl with no opinions, but she is the type that often will wait to be asked for her opinion before she gives it.
She spends most of her time listening. A lot of her friends through her life have considered her something of a personal counselor because of that fact, that alongside the idea that she just gets people. Which she does--she is reading people's minds. She usually listens because she's busy not only following the conversations she's having, but the thought patterns behind them. It isn't that she wants to be invasive and going against people's privacy, but if she cares enough to give someone her ear, she damn well wants to be able to help.
One of the most prominent things people know about her other than the fact that she's a great listener and kind of quiet is her love of music and dance. She plays several instruments, listens to music(pretty much all kinds) quite often, and keeps up with several types of dance. Basically, if it's got to do with music, she's passionate about it. It's the one subject that when brought up will light her up like the sun after a storm, and she gets animated about.
A final facet of her personality is she loves nature. She often takes long walks during the evenings, just liking being outside in general. She loves the lake, she loves animals and as a part time job she works at a vet's office. Nature is just her thing as much as music is, it's just something kind of harder to share.
History:
Hayley is the only child of a couple who never quite had a lot of anything. They both came from poor families and never quite managed to get to an upper middle class. They're hard workers and the types of people who aren't complainers either, which is a lot of where Hayley got her temperment from. When the Church of Harmony started to gain attention they checked it out and have been regular members since.
Growing up was a little bit of a drama for Hayley, however. Moving around the UP depending on where her father could get work--but never fully leaving the area--meant there were a lot of new places and new friends to make, and that was besides the fact that she was a psychic. It triggered when she was fairly young, though at first no one so much noticed, or they believed she was merely very observant or intuitive. Later, though, when she got to be more insistant about things, she was brought to a psychiatrist, and unfortunately institutionalized between the ages of seven through nine. She was at the Newberry State Hospital during that time, and of course nothing really helped. She had believed at the time that she was crazy, though it became clear later that it wasn't the case.
Things came to a head when her parents were visiting, something they did daily, and every day for a week, Hayley would write down numbers that her parents were thinking, something her mother devised as a way to test things with her. Nothing had been helping her daughter and she wanted to find an alternative solution and while 'psychic' was kind of a stretch, she would rather consider that than anything else, especially since no other treatments worked and she couldn't even get a proper diagnosis. Once it became clear that Hayley was in fact, reading people's minds, she was checked out of the facility, brought home, and the family moved back to Marquette to start life over. They also decided then that continual moving around was unhelpful for their daughter, and therefore they found permenant employment there, even if it wasn't anything that paid especially well.
While unable to cater much to Hayley, her parents very much fully encouraged and do everything to help her with her love of music. For Hayley, she discovered that when she's listening to it, it helps her focus enough that she isn't picking up on anything else from anyone else. She's gotten much better with control since finding out for certain that she was telepathic, but it still isn't perfect. She works very hard on it, but if she ever needs a true break, that escape is in the form of music and dance for her. She sings as well, but she's very shy about that, and rarely sings in front of anyone. She was in chorus in school, but refused to ever perform solos.
At school at MSHS, Hayley tries to be a good friend, supportive to people around her, and lately that's been a heck of a lot bigger task than it ever was before. She was never the type that let on about her ability--since up until recently people would have scoffed at her for it in the first place, or worse yet, thought she was some sort of freak. While not ashamed of what she is, she doesn't run around advertising it either. Mostly she just tries to use her abilities for good, and when she's not doing that she listens to music to block out stray thoughts.
Affiliation:Church of Harmony
Special abilities and skills:
Reading music, playing several instruments, singing, dancing.
Weaknesses:
Distress Signals - Even if it works a little bit opposite to what she's read happens with many psychics(they pick up more thoughts when they're upset), one of the main things that Hayley picks up on accidentally is when people around her are upset. Fear, anger, loss, etc, if it's hitting high on the charts there's a good chance she'll pick up on it if she's in range. This is something she tries hard to come up with a fix for(beyond trying to find a reasonable way to start a conversation to check on people), but so far she's not managed it.
Crowds - Hayley doesn't like crowds so much. They get overwhelming for her, and sometimes her control slips more and she just starts getting random thoughts off of people, and that's a headache waiting to happen. So she generally avoids them unless there is something major to concentrate on beyond the people gathered. Concerts are perfect for her to engage in a group activity and not drive herself nuts. Movies are okay, if she goes to shows that less people are attending, but sporting events are terrible, school assemblys are a nightmare. If she can avoid a large gathering she will, even if sometimes she feels like she misses out on some things because of it.
Control - She's still learning how to get the best grip on her abilities that she can have. A little bit of a hampering to that is the fact that she discovered music can help her with it by tuning things out, so it's a bit of a crutch now, and if she doesn't have it, then she's less able to reign things in. What she really needs to learn to do is to stop masking things and learn how to shut it down when she doesn't want it going off, but so far she hasn't managed it. It isn't all the time, and she she can go for hours without hearing some stray thought, but at least once every few hours she'll get a taste of something she shouldn't have picked up on, and if she isn't looking at whoever she got the thought from, she doesn't know it's a thought she's heard. She also doesn't have any magical ability to tell who the stray thought was coming from unless they're drawing attention to themselves or she recognizes their voice--and some people's internal voice doesn't always sound like themselves, or are memories of things told to them, so sometimes it's confusing for her.
Shy - Hayley did spend a little time in an asylum. It was a terrible time for her, the thoughts of the mad aren't always pleasant things, and she was a child at the time. But even in a children's ward, there aren't nice things going on there. Either way, she spent time in a place like that where she could hear people's deranged thoughts and therefore she got a really stark look at how bad things could get at a young age. It's helped her be there for people, and she will try extremely hard to help people in need with their issues so they don't one day crack, but it's made her a little cautious too. And even if it's totally ridiculous and people around Marquette never ever have to know that she was once at Newberry, there's a part of her that's terrified of anyone fiding out. She feels like it's a dark secret in her past that people wouldn't understand, even if a different part of her longs to be able to talk to someone about it. She doesn't talk to her parents about it because she's well aware of the fact that they both feel absolutely horrible that it happened at all even if it wasn't something they can actually be blamed for. It leaves her feeling a little isolated just on that score, and that's not counting the fact that she's a damn telepath and doesn't tell people about that either. She wishes she had people she could confide in like others confide in her, but so far she hasn't managed to find people like that. Her only true outlet there is just going to church and knowing some people there are different like she is, but she hasn't approached anyone about anything due to her quiet, shy nature. Hayley's never had a boyfriend, mainly due to the fact that boys sometimes think fairly tasteless things and so if anything's even started it generally ends before it gets going because of something she can't even quite explain to others.
Migraines - Like a lot of psychics, Hayley gets migraines. Sometimes they're just after a day filled with people with spiking emotions (the day the little critters attacked the school knocked her on her ass for almost two days), or if she has to go to school assemblys, if a store is particularly crowded, etc. Crowds definitely do her in a lot of times unless it's those special circumstances. Sometimes she'll brave it for specific reasons, like she used to attend parties that the promise theory played, but it's got to be a good reason. More often than not it leaves her incapacitated for a while, and when she does have a migraine, she is in fact, useless.
Supernaturally Uninformed - She knows things are out there now but Hayley doesn't know a lot about much. She's done her homework on psychics, especially telepaths, but doesn't know much about anything else. She only knows what she's learned on television and that hasn't been much, especially since the loops went up. (and the fact that half the reports on television were contradictory) She'd like to learn but is overwhelmed by the possibilities and therefore has sort of shied away from starting, because she doesn't know where to start.
Defenseless - She's a dancer so somewhat athletic, but she doesn't know how to throw a punch. She doesn't know how to use a gun, or any other weapon for that matter, and she wouldn't even want to touch one, if she was being honest. Weapons scare her, and the idea of being in a fight scares her as well. She flat out doesn't have the skills required to properly defend herself in this brave new world, and that's probably a problem. But because it's all so scary, she also hasn't done anything to remedy the situation.
Strengths:
There - Hayley is a very good friend to those she's friends with. She's an extremely good listener, and is supportive and kind in general. She's the type who if she can do something to help she will, even if it costs her something in the process. She wants to hear happy thoughts from people, so she contributes. She's the kind of girl who wants to make people around her smile and will give little gifts if she can, or do little things along with the big ones of standing up to people if it's necessary.
Stronger Than You'd Think - Hayley is a girl who's been through a lot, and while shy, she isn't spineless, or some shrinking flower. She can deal with a lot, it would take quite a bit to break her down, even if people would generally think she'd be easy to crack.
