Furrymagnet
Submitted by Megan (nat) on Wed, 11/17/2010 - 16:13
Who: Kayos and Megan
Where: Kayos' Place
When: Morning
Megan almost didn't get the donuts because she'd left her flip flops in someone's mailbox. No shoes no service deal, but the baker behind the counter hadn't noticed and Megan didn't give any inclination that she was barefoot. She got a dozen, a variety since she wasn't sure what Kayos liked and she picked up a breakfast sandwich too.
Approaching the house while the owner was there made things feel a little different this time. She'd gone through the residence, sniffing around for any sign of her and Megan felt that she'd invaded her privacy, now that she was back and everything. This time instead of just walking in, she rung the doorbell with food in hands, wondering what this conversation might bring.
Kayos' first thought when she heard the bell was 'I have a doorbell?' Which probably wasn't the best response, but it was there. Generally Teddybear warned her when she had company, and the only people who ever dropped by knew to go to the back door, where they could get buzzed in. But that didn't mean she didn't have a front door on the building she'd renovated. She'd even had to put it back on it's hinges and fix it--something she'd gotten taken care of immediately after getting back. But still, she headed for said front door when the shock of having a doorbell wore off. Granted it wasn't fast or anything, due to the crutches of it all, but she made it and opened the door after Teddy flipped all the locks. "Hello?" she greeted when she saw a familiar looking girl standing out there. Though she didn't think they'd ever properly been introduced. She smiled, though, sort of half hopping back to make room for the girl to come in.
"Hi," Megan said with a strained smile as she saw Kayos hobbling on the crutches. "I'm Megan. Girl you messaged you? Dorian's friend? Werewolf girl? We sort of keep meeting in high crisis situations we never actually met." She shifted the box in her hands and looked from Kayos to the door and with the shuffling back, Megan took that as an okay to come in and she did. "I brought donuts." She held up the box.
"Mrs. Tetris." Kayos said, nodding, clicking it all together. "Hey, welcome, come on in, make yourself at home." she invited. "And donuts are awesome, and therefore you're my new favorite person right now. Kitchen's this way." she said, giving a smile and heading down the corridor. "Want some coffee? I have some made." she added over her shoulder.
Megan closed the door behind her and followed Kayos down the hall. "Yeah, that's me. You mentioned looking for something to eat and I thought you might be a donut person. I got a breakfast sandwich too just in case though and I'm good." She was kind of tense not because she was afraid but this was kind of new for her and it involved talking a lot and it was something she was still getting used to. "How's your ankle doing?"
"My ankle is doing 'hey, I'm sprained'." Kayos said. "But could be worse. Plus, I've got crutches with flames up the sides, so I could be considered 'stylin' by now, something I don't think I do often." she said, getting into the kitchen. "And thanks a lot for the food, you didn't have to do that. But I won't turn you down, either." she said with a smile, getting coffee mugs out. "How're you and your lot doing?" she asked, since she knew Megan was connected with the other werewolf, and Dean and such.
Setting the box on the kitchen table she moved over to Kayos. "And I'm sure the ankle is also saying that you should kick back in a chair. I can get the coffee. And we're doing good. Everyone's happy that everyone's back and the boys I think are doing okay. I have to drop in but so far everyone seems to be adjusting alright." She didn't crowd in on Kayos or hover, but stood nearby. Not only did Kayos have the crutches, but she didn't want to hover or something.
"I'm okay, I've had way worse than a sprained ankle, and I've been resting it." she promised, setting out cream and sugar after she filled up the mugs. "Glad to hear that people are doing okay though." she added. "I know Dean wasn't dealing so well when we were there. He was kinda freaked, poor guy." Just freaked in a very quiet manner.
"Yeah, he plays stuff close to the vest." She did too, which is why she had been able to recognize it when she first started hanging out with Dean. "A lot of stuff's changed lately. He's got more on his mind than he's used to, I'm sure. But he also has a lot of people who are very happy that he's back. And I'm glad you're back. You had two very worried men come looking for my help to track you down." The strain left her smile and it was more relaxed this time as she got more comfortable in the enviroment. "Is your AI back up yet?" That had been weird to hear when she'd come by. Some disemodied voice that hadn't talked to her, but she'd picked it up when it spoke to Hunt and Dorian while she was there.
She brought the coffee to the table, and sat down, pushing a chair out with her foot for Megan to join her. "Yeah, I'm sure he does have a lot. I was the one who brought everyone to Manchester, that was a ton to deal with, then this." she said. Then she quirked a smile. "Thanks for helping them." she said. "And me. In general, thanks. You're good people." she assessed. "And yeah, Teddy's back up. Not at full capacity, but back up."
Megan took a seat and her eyes flicked up to the ceiling as if she'd be able to see 'Teddy'. "We all really appreciate your help with that. It's funny that we've done some pretty death daring stuff and we've only really talked online." She sipped the coffee to test the temperature and took a bigger sip when she found it alright to do so. "And any time someone needs my help, I'm there. Dorian's important to me so when he called for my help, there I was." She took another sip. "I don't mean to say I wouldn't have if it wasn't for Dorian. I'd help find you anyway. I'm not very good at saying things sometimes."
Taking a donut, she took a bite as she listened. "A lot of people aren't good at saying things." Kayos said with a little laugh. "I'm not always good with the brain-mouth filter. I try, but occasionally? You just say what's on your mind and it's exactly the wrong thing. But yes, I'm glad to get to talk to you in person for a while, instead of over the computer. There's a difference and all. Plus, now I'll be able to sort of connect wolf-forms and people-forms. Which is nice." And it was quite clear that she had experience with werewolves before by the lack of even lightly weird feelings towards it.
"Yeah, that's the hard part I think of knowing wolves. It's not every day you know someone who can change into an animal." Megan took a survey of the donut box before picking one and pulled a piece off. "Over the computer is definitely easier for me," she admitted. "You're on the other side of a screen and you can go over the things you say and make sure you've got your facts straight or you're writing what you mean." She had a hard time with people and social situations which is why she was making herself try here. It wasn't too bad so far.
"I don't know, I've worked with and been friends with a few in my day. Just when there's more than one, I like to be sure I have the right wolf with the right person in my head." Kayos said. "Which isn't too hard, just the past few times I've seen you, you've been with another one as well, so unless I want to start looking for parts--and I don't--I want to know the markings better." she said witha smile. "And I get what you mean about the computer. It was how I did things when I was younger." she said. "I just after a while recognized that if you edit everything you say, or edit all of your interactions no one actually knows you at the end of the day." she said.
That can be nice sometimes though, Megan considered and nodded. "Yeah, no, that makes sense. Well, Oz is the black one. I'm the reddish brown one." She held up a lock of hair. "It's actually pretty close to this color. And speaking of Oz and you working with werewolves, not only was I here to bring donuts but I wanted to talk about your team that you posted about. Is it still in the throw-around idea stages. Is it even a team or is it a phone tree?" It had sounded like she was putting together people, but it might not even be what Megan had been thinking of.
"It's just getting thrown together, and it'll be whatever it ends up being, I suppose." Kayos said. "I wanted people to be able to get information out fast to people it would matter to, and have back up if anything came up. Like if anything happened to you and yours, I'd want to know about it, even if we don't hang out all the time. i'd still want to help out. That sort of thing." she said. "And in certain situations, certain talents are important to have. Like they needed you to help track me, or I could get people to England in .2 seconds."
Megan nodded. So it was a little of all the things she thought. "Well Oz and me are in for whatever help is needed. And there's a lot of people who'd want to help." Like Tad, but she wasn't sure if she should mention that now, so she decided not to say anything yet. "Are you going to set up separate groups for what's needed? Like people who are best suited for sticking here instead of going through doors. We had a problem like that when we went to get you guys. Some people who came that really shouldn't." She didn't want to suggest the idea. She didn't know if it wasn't what Kayos had in mind of maybe Kayos had already thought of it.
"Good to know and thank you for you and his help." Kayos said. "I'd like to tag everyone that does agree--I can track people and monitor vital signs. So if anything happened and you weren't anywhere near a computer or phone, I'd still find out about it. Kind of a last ditch safety precaution." she explained. "And as for the groups thing, it's not really a 'Kayos is in charge' sort of situation i was looking for, I wanted it to be more a collaboration. So if people want to set something up for people who aren't to be called if it has anything to do with door jumping, that's perfectly acceptable."
"You're the one who put up the post. Even if you aren't in charge, people are going to assume you are, or at least the go to person. Just because you started the post." Megan shrugged and chewed on her donut. "Tagging?" she asked after she swallowed. "Like microchips?" That was the first kind of tagging she could think of. The microchips the vet could put in your pets she'd heard on television years back.
Kayos shook her head. "No. Nothing would be on you at all, and it wouldn't be trackable beyond my own personal method. No reverse tracking, no signal, nothing like that. I just need a drop of blood, and then I get vitals. That's all. No procedure besides a pinprick." she assured. "And I get the people looking to me for decisions since I started it and all, I just wanted to be sure to put out there that I want it to be a group thing, with a group effort, I never intended to be leader girl." She smiled. "I don't know everything. And I'm smart enough to know that."
"Would you be keeping the blood?" Megan asked first. Even though Kayos said she only needed a drop of blood, sometimes a drop of blood was all you needed for other things. "I understand what you mean. It's a good idea. Sometimes, you know, people who don't mean to be leaders end up being leaders. Would you be ready if that happened? Or are you looking to be Oracle for the Justice League?" From the sounds of it, the tracking and the intranet was what her bread and butter was and that's where she wanted to stay.
"Technically, though I don't really have it. It's something my familiar keeps." Kayos explained. "I don't have samples laying around somewhere, if that's what you're asking. As for if I'd be ready for that or not, I would be." she said. "I've done it before, I just would prefer if there wasn't some clear cut 'and here's the leader, y'know the one with the giant bullseye on her forehead'. Plus for me, I like everyone's input. And even if I know people very well, they will always know their own strengths and weaknesses far better than I would be able to assess. So I want everyone's voice to weigh in on things."
Megan still wasn't entirely sure how comfortable she felt about that but she nodded at the clarification on the samples. "So a committee. Well, I'm definitely in. Where do I sign up?" she smiled a little bit, working on the joking and the facial expressions.
Kayos laughed a little. "Just want to that tiny sample of blood I wanted to get? That'll pretty much do it. And I'll contact you on the intranet, I'm sort of hoping to have a separate network worked out from there, like a board only people involved can access, so it'll be private at least, but easy to access."
"Sign up with blood. That's a nice touch. So how do we do that?" She licked the sugar off her fingers before realizing that it was bad manners and she wiped her hands on her dress instead. "A separate board? Can you do that?" then another thought occurred to her. "Whose running the intranet anyway?"
Kayos nodded. "Yes, it'd be just like any private forum on the internet." she explained. "And let me go get a bandage and such." she said. "As for who's running the intranet, it's not quite like that. It'd be like asking who runs the internet. It's just sort of out there, located on a bunch of different servers all over the place. I mean, I helped design the intranet, but it was off the back of a system already in place in the first place, it didn't take that much tweaking."
Well, she knew no single person ran the regular internet, but Megan didn't know if the intranet was different or not. If there was someone in charge of keeping it working or something since it was on a smaller level. "Can it work through the doors?" she asked curiously.
"Yeah, if you check on there, there's people from New York posting, things like that." Kayos said. "So, it's like the phone lines, it works. Plus, apparently? Someone had a nice chunk of the internet on servers somewhere, so part of the net is actually sorta back up." she said. "Which is odd, but cool, I'd say." She smiled.
"Tetris..." Megan said suddenly as she took that in. Part of the internet back up? Tetris. Not connecting with people from other loop areas. Tetris.
Kayos laughed, and ducked out to come back momentarily to grab a little stickpin and tiny square of bandage to put the blood droplet. "Here you go. I only need a tiny tiny bit." she said. "And you realize tetris is available in other methods beyond the internet, right?" she asked.
"I used to have it on gameboy before the game got smashed," Megan said as she eyed the little stickpin. She could be slashed by Rakashas and be pretty okay with that but stick pins? She knew how painful it was to get thorns stuck in her paw. Stickpins fell into that category. Slowly, she held out her hand for Kayos to poke. "Did you do this to Dorian?" she asked for something else to take her mind off of the whole pin sticking.
Kayos hadn't been intending to stick Megan herself, she just held the pin out to her. "Not yet, but I will soon." she said. "I plan on doing so for everyone who'll let me. It just makes things easier. And it's nice to have failsafes in place."
Megan took the pin and looked at her finger. owowowowowow she was already thinking. "So how does the whole tracking thing work with just a blood sample?" Megan could only figure some kind of techno-magic idea since she didn't know much of either. She poked her finger quick, not making a sound. It didn't hurt at first, but then the blood started beading up and ow. Grabbing the piece of bandage, Megan smeared some on. owwwww.
Kayos took the sample when Megan was done, and she gave a little half smile. "It's monitored by my computer system, it's kinda magic mixed with technology, but it's non-traceable by anyone but me." she said.
"I'm not even going to pretend to understand how magic and technology can mix up," Megan said after a moment of trying to absorb that. Even after everything, she could still be surprised. "Just you. I don't want this to cause trouble for any of my family like someone using my signal to lead them to the rest. Not that I'm saying you would do that, it's just the worry I have." She was talking an awful lot today and Megan looked away from Kayos and minded the donut. "I've been told I can be paranoid. I don't mean to be." She suddenly felt like she had just crashed and burned with the whole socializing thing and shook her head. "You're good people though."
"Nothing like that's possible." Kayos said. "Nothing even gives off anything they could track back to me, or you, or anything. There won't be a trail whatsoever." she promised. "And thanks, I'm glad I pass inspection." she said, smiling a touch at that. "But don't worry. I know about paranoia and frankly some of it's warranted. I would want to know that this wasn't going to backlash at any point as well."
"If it was just me I wouldn't mind so much. I can take care of myself. It's funny. People are so eager to accept vampires than they are wolves who are usually only wolves some of the time. Cursed wolves..." she shrugged. "I understand why people are scared but we're not all like that. Of course then it's a lot more complicated than that but then that paranoia extends to other things and people tell you you shouldn't freak out as much over things so now I'm trying to figure out what are things I should be really concerned about versus things that I shouldn't worry too much about." She frowned a little. "I never talk this much."
Kayos arched a brow. "People are eager to accept vampires?" she asked. "Where are you getting that from?" she asked curiously. Because in her experience, people had been going out of their way to exterminate vampires. They'd gone through the town more than once and killed a whole lot of people and destroyed a lot of buildings. "I don't think that's quite right." she said hesitantly. "As for how much you're talking, I say talk. I do it all the time. Keeps me sane. If I just sat around and only played off of my own thoughts they'd get pretty skewed pretty fast. I totally need the sanity checks." she admitted with a smile.
"You don't see clubs full of people wanting to get turned into wolves or an entire sub-culture eager to become the next Anne Rice extra," she clarified with a shrug. "You don't really see things like that with wolves. It's mostly just the same approach as putting down rabid dogs, but then, I'm probably biased." Megan could admit that. "Although now that I think about it, you're the one that let us know about the, what were they called? Furries?" she pulled a face.
Kayos laughed a little. "Yep. So don't worry, there's a whole creepy sub-culture devoted to you as well." she said. "Though either way, neither of those things are prominent here. So I think you're safe from sub-cultures entirely. You'll have to go looking for them if you really want to check out the culture." she said.
"And that is something I don't plan on doing any time soon," Megan said. "But if the blood is all you needed from me, I should get going. I've got some things I need to do and I'm sure you have things to take care of too." She smiled at Kayos. "It was nice to finally properly meet you. I hope that ankle heals up okay."
Kayos smiled. "Nice to meet you too, sweetie." she said genuinely. "Come by whenever, call, text, I'm around. And I like hanging out. So, if you're ever bored..." she offered. "I'll see you soon. Stay safe." she said, starting to head back to her computer so she could input Megan's blood so she could watch the girl's vitals. All she needed was a name to put it under. She was thinking 'furrymagnet'.
