Stashed in the mailbox of her house is the original medal's box, contained in which is both the Medal of Valor and the following:

This might be totally worthless, but it's the only shot I have left. You gave me these abilities back for a reason. I've thought about it and I know now that I can't be the same person I was before. I don't want to be the same person. I want to be able to be both me now but with my powers from me before. I also know this isn't possible. I know that one day I will lose my abilities again because I'm not willing to lose what I have now for them. I'm asking you to accept this medal thing you gave me in exchange for my wings. To have them back again when I never was supposed to in the first place and then lose them a second time would be brutal. So this is me asking you to let me keep them. When Star comes to take my abilities away, I am asking to be able to keep my wings. They are the only medal of valor I will ever need. Give this medal to someone else who deserves it more, just give me my wings in return. Please.
