Site Frequently Asked Questions

Answer

The limitations for the icons is 100x100 pixels in size and 60k in file size, and in gif, jpg, or png format.

We do ask that your icons be non-explicit (no sexually graphic images, no icons featuring inflammatory messages).

Answer

Yes - at the moment the site is in beta-testing and as guinea pigs, you get it for free, you lucky people! Eventually it is intended to be opened up to the general public at which stage it will be funded through a mixture of advertising and optional advert-free paid accounts. The exact mix has not yet been decided yet.

Answer

No. This is a role playing game site. Very little, if anything, you find on this site is actually real.

Many users create journals with the face of a celebrity for use in role-playing games. These journals typically contain a disclaimer in their user information stating that it is part of a game, they are not the celebrity, and have no contact with the celebrity.

Character journals (journals created using the names of characters from books/television shows/films) are not sanctioned by the copyright holders.

Both types of journal are for entertainment/gaming purposes only. No malice or infringement is intended and the contents of the journal should NOT be taken as true/authorised.

Answer

Answer

You can only upload user pictures for approved characters. Once you have had a character approved, you will be able to upload user pictures for that character.

Answer

At the moment, this is set to 50 icons per user. Each icon can be no bigger than 100 x 100 px.

Answer

Each character has their own gallery. You can view a character's gallery from their character information/profile page. You can either look at the gallery nine icons at a time from that page, or click the 'view entire gallery' link to be taken to a view of the entire gallery.

Answer

Log into your account, and go to the 'my account' section. Under 'edit', right under your username, there should be two fields for your password. To change it, simply type in your new password in both fields, and hit 'save'. Your password will be changed.

Guidelines for a good password include:

1. It should be 6-10 characters,
2. contains mixed case characters such as WmPoV,
3. contains symbols such as ! @ # $,
4. is a word that does NOT appear in the dictionary, and
5. Is something that is not associated with you, such as your pet's name, names of family members, your favorite band's name or anything else personal

For example:
little or brother are not good passwords.

RxTmWm12!! is a good password.

Answer

RPGDreams is not responsible for lost passwords. Remember your passwords, and it is likely a good idea to keep the email that is sent to you when you first create an account. That will have your username on it. If you have already changed your password from the default one assigned, then it is lost. The link in the emails really is a one time use, and cannot be used again to log into your account to change the password. Please keep your passwords somewhere you can access them should you lose them! We currently have no way to retrieve them for you!

Answer

No - if you leave the game, your account will be changed to 'view only' status - which will allow you view access (but not posting rights) to the community. The administrators do, however, reserve the right to delete your account in cases of abuse.

Answer

At the moment, you cannot delete your account. This can only be done by an administrator. If you wish your account to be deleted, please talk to an administrator or moderator.

Please note that, once deleted, an account CANNOT be reinstated.

Answer

First up, we realise that the set up of this website is probably completely different to what you've encountered before and there are some important things to note!

First and foremost you only need one account! That's right - no having to create multiple accounts for multiple characters and spending endless hours logging in and out depending on who you're posting as! At RPG Dreams you only need the one account - your player account.

How does this work, we here you say? Okay, it's easy! You apply for an account as a player. Choose whatever account name you want (it doesn't have to have anything to do with the character you're applying for - choose something that you as a player can relate to). Great, you're now a member of RPG Dreams!

Answer

To be able to post in RPGDreams you need more than an account - you need to have had a character accepted to a game. This is an RP site and character-driven. If you haven't had a character accepted, you need to go through the game application process. Posting rights will come with game acceptance.

Answer

You can add a header image to a character profile by going to 'edit character' and then uploading an image from your computer in 'header image'.

Answer

You can set a default character image for any of your characters on their character information/profile page. On the left hand side of the page, you will see a block showing your current default character image (if you have already set one) and giving you a drop down list of all your character's available pictures - if you wish to choose or change the default icon, simply choose a different picture!

Answer

We have taken the view that the Out of Character Community is just that - out of character. Therefore only players can post in the OOC. Character posts are limited to the in character communities. As a player, you can upload a default icon through your player profile page, and this is what appears on your OOC posts.

Answer

Acceptable HTML are the following:

<a> <b> <big> <br> <center> <cite> <code> <dd> <div> <dl> <dt> <em> <font> <form> <h1> <h2> <h3> <hr> <i> <img> <input> <li> <nobr> <ol> <option> <p> <pre> <s> <select> <small> <strike> <strong> <table> <td> <th> <tr> <tt> <u> <ul> <xmp>

Please remember that ALL of these codes need to be properly closed using the </command>. Forgetting to close the codes can cause problems displaying your entries and comments.

NOTE:

Please be careful of using HTML, especially with fonts and tables. RPGDreams posts cut automatically after 600 words and if tags are not closed at the time of the cut, it will mess up the formatting of the page you are viewing! Therefore, if you are writing a post which requires special formatting throughout (such as a hand written journal entry), please ensure you use the <!--break--> tag either at the beginning of the post so that all of the post is beneath a cut, or alternatively after the first paragraph (so long as the first paragraph is less than 600 words!)

A website such as http://www.w3schools.com/html/ may be of assistance in explaining the codes and how to use them. PLEASE NOTE that this website is NOT affiliated with RPGDreams in any way and the link is provided only as a resource.

Answer

At this time, the only way to save your entries is to save them manually - either by copy and pasting them into a text or word file, or by saving the entry on your browser. On most browsers, this is as easy as locating File, and then an option such as Save As, Save Page As, or Make Viewable Offline.

Answer

CHECK THE FOLLOWING IS CORRECT:-

The time on your journal entries is based on the time set on your computer. If your posts consistently show an incorrect date or time, verify that your computer's clock is set to the correct time for your timezone.

To set the date and time through Microsoft Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP please follow these instructions:

1. Right click on the time in your systray. This is commonly in the bottom right hand corner of your screen.

2. Click Adjust Date/Time.

3. This will open the Date/Time Properties window. In this window you can adjust the time and date, time, and time zone. The time zone can be changed or checked by clicking on the Time Zone tab.

If you wish to change how the computer handles daylight savings click the Time Zone tab and check or uncheck the 'Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes' option.

4. Once the proper date and/or time has been set click Apply and then Ok.

Answer

Scenes and journal entries in RPGDreams are set up to cut automatically, so you don't have to worry about it! The automatic cut off point is 600 words.

There may, however, be times when you wish to cut your post off before this, or when you may wish to have control over where the post cuts (for example, when using a special font, or where you have a table). Therefore, if you are writing a post which requires special formatting throughout (such as a hand written journal entry), simply move the cursor to where you wish the cut to be and press the 'Split summary at cursor' button.

Answer

While viewing the entry you wish to delete, locate and click the Edit link at the top of the page. This will bring you to the editing page. Scroll to the bottom of the page, where there will be a link to delete the entry. PLEASE be certain you are deleting the correct entry! Once an entry has been deleted there is NO WAY to get the entry back again.

Answer

While viewing the entry you wish to edit, there are two links beneath the subject - View, and Edit. Clicking the Edit link will bring you to the editing page. Make whatever changes you need, and remember to hit the Save button at the bottom of the page.

Answer

On this site, you have to pick where you want your post to go before you write it. For the in-character posts, you also have to make sure that you have the correct character selected first!

To create content, simply click the 'create content' button in the drop down box at the top of each page. This will give you a list of options.

Out of Character Post - this will create a post from you, as a player, for the Out of Character Community. Your characters cannot post in this community. All OOC posts are only visible to logged in players of the game.
Scene - this will create a scene posted by your currently active character. If you have more than one approved character in the game, you should ensure that you are posting with the correct character. Change to the correct character before creating your post.
Journal Entry - this will create a journal entry posted by your currently active character. If you have more than one approved character in the game, you should ensure that you are posting with the correct character. Change to the correct character before creating your post.

Once a post has been created, there is no way to move it to a different location without reposting.

Answer

For in character scenes, journal entries and comments, any posts or replies you make will be from your currently selected character. You will only be able to make in-character posts and comments with approved and active characters. If you only have one character in the game, that will always be the currently selected character. If you have more than one character in the game, you can change your currently selected character from the drop down box at the top of the page.

You must ensure you have the correct character selected before starting to compose your entry/comment. You cannot compose your comment, realise you have the wrong cahracter, and then try and change the character just before hitting 'save'. if you realise that you've got the wrong character selected, you will have to start all over again.

Answer

Yes you can! But the one thing we'd ask for this is that you're careful doing it. If special fonts are used, they have to be ended specifically or they'll just carry right on down the page! Finish your posts with </font>.

Also, could you remember to use a specific <!--break--> tag within the post - either at the start of the post or after a paragraph so that the post does not 'cut' automatically (which also screws up the formatting for the entire page).

FOR EXAMPLE (your post should look something like this:-

<font face="festus!" size="5">Oh god. I feel sick. And not just sick-sick (which I do, but that’s neither here nor there. But…</font><!--break-->

<font face="festus!" size="5">I got a message from Leija’s dad. she’s in the hospital. Oh god, she’s in the hospital. I left her there, I didn’t even try and help. And she’s in the hospital.

It’s always going to be this way, isn’t it? because I know that I would do exactly the same thing if it happened again. Which just makes it worse. I feel guilty, but I couldn’t say that next time it’d be different. But I never wanted it to be like this.</font>

Answer

Posts automatically break (ie the whole post will not appear in the main comm, but be hidden with a 'read more' tag), so if you don't want to be fussed to break it yourself, you don't have to.

You can override the automatic break really easily. All you hvae to do is place your cursor where you want the break to be when creating a psot, then click the 'split sumamry at cursor' button. This will automatically break your post at that point - this is useful if you wish to put a short 'teaser' on your scene of a couple of paragraphs.

Please note: ALWAYS put a break in for handwritten scenes! If handwritten scenes are allowed to automatically break, they will screw up your entire page and nobody likes that!

Answer

Currently all OOC posts are community locked and some of the pages of information are community locked.

At current you cannot set any other entries to be community locked. Although posting in the game is restricted to players, anybody can read the content which is produced in-game.

Answer

Simply press 'delete' - please be aware though that this will delete all of the comments below it and this action is not reversible.

Answer

Check your PM settings . Go to your account page and press edit, then scroll down to 'Private Message Settings' - make sure 'allow Private Messages' is ticked.

Answer

To send a PM to a player in the game, go to their user info page. There is a tag which reads 'send private message to [username]' - click on that link and it will take you to the PM page. Enter in a subject and message and simply press 'send'

Answer

PMs allow you to send messages to other players within your game without using email or having any other information about them save for their username. Please note that this only applies to players in your game and cannot be used for inter-game contact.

Answer

There are various ways to tell if you have a private message.
1. You can switch on email notifications for private messages in your user info
2. You will be notified of a new private message when you log into your account
3. If you have aggressive notifications of PMs set up, you will get an alert on every page of the site you view in that game until you read the message.

Answer

Everything you need should be available at the top of the page. The in character communities, the OOC and the game FAQs are directly linked at the top, everything else is available in the drop down box.

Answer

yes, you can search the available tags by choosing 'search tags' from the drop down box. Let's say you want to find all the scenes between Caleb and Dorian. Simply go to the 'search tags' page and tick the boxes next to their names, then hit 'search. Your results will be all of the scenes they were both in.
